Foundation Phase teachers from across the Helderberg basin gathered in Macassar on Saturday, March 14, for a conference aimed at supporting and uplifting them.
The annual event, hosted by the Helderberg Sunrise Rotary Club at Bundles of Joy Childcare Center, focused on equipping teachers with knowledge while promoting their overall well-being.
Brian de Villiers, secretary of the Helderberg Sunrise Rotary Club, said the conference opened with a welcome address by club president Gail Sykes, followed by a presentation by master coach Renee Lighton titled Learn. Play. Create, which set the tone for the day.
Teachers also participated in a workshop facilitated by the South African Institute of Child and Adolescent Mental Health, focusing on mindfulness and well-being.
"The session offered the teachers practical tools and gentle reminders about the importance of caring for their own mental and emotional health while supporting the learners they serve every day," Mr de Villiers said.
In addition, school principals and their representatives joined a discussion session with Rotary members to explore challenges facing schools and identify opportunities for collaboration.
Mr de Villiers said the engagement allowed for meaningful dialogue on how organisations and teachers can work together to improve outcomes for pupils.
"It was a wonderful experience for everyone involved - a perfect reminder that connection, fun, and wellbeing are just as important as learning," he said.
The conference concluded on a light-hearted note, with participants taking part in a line dancing session that brought the day to a close.
