This Sunday, March 22, marks the second-last chance to experience this car-free, pedestrian-friendly stretch of Bree Street before the final event on Sunday, March.
From 10am to 5pm, Bree Street between Wale and Strand Streets (with Shortmarket Street also participating) will transform into a vibrant public space for the community.
There will be dedicated game zones for adults, including soccer, cricket, and pickleball, while children can enjoy their own play area complete with a jumping castle.
The final event on Sunday, March 29, will also showcase “People’s Lane on Bree” — South Africa’s first street experiment aimed at creating a safer, more people-focused urban space.
The initiative is part of the Safe Passage Programme and will see Bree Street reimagined as a greener, more inclusive public space.
Managing director of Young Urbanists, Roland Postma, says: “The last one on March 29 is gonna be the biggest one yet, and no one should miss it.”
Construction on the pilot project begins on Monday, March 23, and the public will be invited to experience the changes firsthand at the final event and share feedback ("Cape Town's innovative People's Lane pilot to enhance urban living," Capetowner, March 10).
The event is free to attend.
