A remarkable young talent from Milnerton is preparing to take her place on the world stage, carrying with her not only her dreams but the pride of a community and a nation.
Gianna Khusal, 11, in Grade 6 at Milnerton Primary School, has been selected to represent South Africa at the prestigious International Championships for Performance Arts (ICPA), set to take place in Barcelona, Spain, from Sunday, June 28 to Friday, July 3.
According to ICPA, she is believed to be the youngest South African ever chosen to compete at the event.
Gianna will perform in the 12-year age category in both piano and vocals, a testament to her versatility and exceptional musical ability.
She hones her craft at New Rising Arts Studio in Milnerton, where her dedication and passion for music continue to flourish.
In a statement, the school’s personal assistant to the principal, Paula Oosthuizen, praised Gianna’s achievement, describing it as the result of “extraordinary skill, unwavering dedication, and countless hours of hard work”.
She said that Gianna’s passion continues to inspire those around her as she prepares to compete among some of the world’s most talented young performers.
For Gianna and her family, the moment is both humbling and deeply rewarding.
Her mother, Gita Khusal, shared her pride, saying her daughter has worked exceptionally hard for the opportunity.
“With a humble heart, we are so grateful. She aims to make South Africa proud,” she said.
Ms Khusal said that while Gianna gives her all to everything she does, her focus as a parent is to guide her towards balance and character.
“Reach for the stars, but never let your feet leave the ground,” she said, describing it as a reminder for her daughter to remain humble, gracious, and kind.
Gianna’s father, Rupesh Khusal, is equally proud, with the family describing the moment as one of “excitement and jubilation”.
Despite her young age, Gianna has already performed on major stages, and sees each opportunity as a chance to express herself and make a difference through her talent.
“She is ready to shine in Spain. We believe this is just the beginning,” said ms Khusal.
While the journey ahead is filled with promise, it also comes with significant financial challenges. The cost of the trip is estimated at R100 000, covering flights, accommodation, travel documentation, meals, competition fees and associated expenses.
The family has been heartened by the outpouring of community support as they work towards making the journey possible.
They have also expressed their gratitude to those who have played a role in Gianna’s development, including her piano coach, Richard Gauld, vocal coach, Tashai Simons, and the ongoing support from Milnerton Primary School.
