Residents across Table View and surrounding communities have come together in a heartwarming show of generosity this Easter, bringing joy to thousands of children living in informal settlements through sweet treats and small gifts.
Table View-based non-profit TLC Projects appealed to the public to donate Easter eggs for underprivileged families in nearby informal settlements, and the response was overwhelming.
More than 5000 Easter marshmallows were distributed to children, with the bulk of the donation coming from the Meals on Wheels Brooklyn branch.
In addition to the Easter treats, children also received pairs of socks donated by Sexy Socks, adding an extra layer of warmth and care to the initiative.
Communities that benefited from the initiative included Wolverivier, Atlantis, Killarney Bush, Melkboss Village, and Dunoon.
TLC Projects founder Colleen Pietersen said the project was about more than just gifts, but about reminding children and families that they are seen and valued.
“While we remember the real reason for celebrating Easter, it’s such an awesome feeling to share a sweet treat with thousands of families where they know there are people who care,” she said.
The large-scale donation effort was made possible in part through the swift response of Meals on Wheels Brooklyn branch manager Sheldon Goslett, who said he immediately recognised the scale of the need when approached by TLC Projects.
“When I became aware that TLC Projects needed to supply Easter eggs to children in informal settlements, I knew it would be a massive task as there are so many of them, so I collected Easter marshmallows and called up Ms Pietersen,” he said.
“We made two donations to TLC because we understood that the need to source this for informal settlements in our surrounding suburbs would be massive.”
Mr Goslett said that seeing images of the children receiving their treats was deeply moving.
“It just melted my heart seeing the smiles on their faces,” he said.
He also confirmed that this collaboration marks the beginning of an ongoing partnership between Meals on Wheels Brooklyn and TLC Projects, with both organisations planning further initiatives aimed at supporting vulnerable communities in the area.
